Was it necessary to write “thank you for accepting my apology,” when I had thought it, so profoundly, a moment before? It felt, in fact, like the sentiment had been degraded in the action of picking up my phone, tapping out the email, and hitting send, all with my mind in the muddle of the material, in the muddle of the idea of the need to act, of the limits of the mind, without the certainty of that moment before, when my mind’s edges felt no boundary
